From my experience, I could pinpoint different capabilities and qualities that are mandatory in freight brokerage, and some of them are:
- Communication: Without this skill, you can’t become a successful freight broker. Daily, you’ll be talking to several people, each with unique needs and orders, and you’ll have to show effective collaboration so they can trust you.
- Negotiation Skills: You’ll want to seal deals at a reasonable price, so negotiation is a must. You have to set your goals, and a bottom line, and even be prepared to walk away.
- Problem-Solving: Keep in mind that you’ll be met with distinct problems, let they be shipping or delivery-related. And if you can provide an instant and effective solution, your demand as a freight broker will increase.
- Customer Service: You are doing an independent job, so you have to provide good customer service. Yes, there will be time when your customers will be unhappy with your service, but how you handle it matters the most.
- Multi-Tasking: Handling several tasks at once is going to be your day-to-day work, so you should be able to handle it properly for smooth workflow.
These are the skills and qualities that every freight broker should have. Without them, you won’t be able to function properly and will lose a lot of clients, and it will damage your name as a broker.
